Research (Varshini) - How does TCM work?

TCM revolves around Qi- the circulating life source. You need more good Qi in your body to be healthy, while having a large amount of bad Qi can be harmful to health. So you need lots of good Qi flowing through your body to be fit. All the treatments in TCM are meant to make sure that you have an abundance of good Qi flowing through your body- a lot of times there will be blockages of Qi in your body and many treatments such as acupuncture can help release the blockages. TCM practitioners always focus on your body, mind and soul compared to Western medicine which only focuses on your body. Thus, herbs and treatments are prescribed in TCM to make sure not only your body is healthy, but also your state of mind. So after a TCM treatment you might feel much more relaxed compared to using Western medicine. This is how TCM works compared to Western medicine.

I don’t think this is alright but I am not sure how to make it better. I just feel that this the summary of how TCM works. Feel free to edit it (if possible).- Varshini

  1. What exactly is Qi? Can this energy form be proven to exist? It would be really an eye opener if western medical science can prove the existence of Qi. By using TCM one sometimes feels more relaxed. I wonder if this feeling is merely psychological because you think that you should feel relaxed so you feel relaxed. Or maybe TCM really works. So difficult to prove!!

  2. yeah what is 'Qi'? and I agree with Nicolette, about the part where the feeling is psychological, instead of physiological. People tell you that it works, and TCM has been around for so many years, so people naturally believes. I mean, you cannot see what exactly is going on inside your body, when the TCM does stuff like acupuncture to you.
